A modern automated facility in the US Midwest may offer competitive unit economics that would have been unthinkable a decade ago.

The reshoring trend does not represent a wholesale rejection of global supply chains. International sourcing, manufacturing partnerships, and cross-border logistics remain foundational to American commerce. What is changing is the sophistication with which companies evaluate those relationships—moving from simple cost comparisons toward rigorous, multi-variable analysis that accounts for risk, resilience, and customer experience.

For logistics professionals, trade consultants, and supply chain executives navigating this environment, the imperative is clear: the companies that will thrive are those that build flexible, data-driven networks capable of adapting as the economics of global trade continue to evolve. Whether that means reshoring, nearshoring, or doubling down on international partnerships, the answer must begin with an honest accounting of all the costs involved—visible and hidden alike.
